Very fun! This is a light read, driven more by characters than the mystery。

i thoroughly enjoyed this book。it started off VERY slow which is my only real problem with this book so i was worried that this was another overhyped celebrity book that i was going to DNF。 but once the pace picked up a bit, i really liked it。 the characters are all likeable, i felt the emotions the book wanted me to and the ending really surprised me。over than the slow start, i think this was a great book and would recommend it。

Lovely little British murder mystery。 A perfect read for an imperfect year of reading。

Enjoyed this book quite a bit。 I appreciated that it did not shy away from the difficult affects of growing older, but at the same time portrayed elderly people living with vitality and purpose。 One quibble (view spoiler)[I'm really not sure why the fact that John was recognized as living in the area in the 70s was such a revelation。 The whole group was close friends with John and Penny and, in fact, had been going through Penny's old case files from the 70s so they must have known that they wer Enjoyed this book quite a bit。 I appreciated that it did not shy away from the difficult affects of growing older, but at the same time portrayed elderly people living with vitality and purpose。 One quibble (view spoiler)[I'm really not sure why the fact that John was recognized as living in the area in the 70s was such a revelation。 The whole group was close friends with John and Penny and, in fact, had been going through Penny's old case files from the 70s so they must have known that they were from the area。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

I know there are a lot of readers who have raved about how wonderful Richard's' books are, but I wasn't that impressed。 Sorry。 There are a lot of better reads out there。Richard is a big larger than life presence on TV & I love him, but not really impressed with his writing。 However, I will read his next book of the series, as sometimes writers improve more as they go along。 His idea for the storyline is good。 The characters are believable。 It is slightly comical, in places。 But it drags along。 A I know there are a lot of readers who have raved about how wonderful Richard's' books are, but I wasn't that impressed。 Sorry。 There are a lot of better reads out there。Richard is a big larger than life presence on TV & I love him, but not really impressed with his writing。 However, I will read his next book of the series, as sometimes writers improve more as they go along。 His idea for the storyline is good。 The characters are believable。 It is slightly comical, in places。 But it drags along。 A few readers might give up, I nearly did, but I persevered。 However, I wasn't bothered who murdered who in the end。 I couldn't wait to get to the end。 But looking at reviews from others it's a 'marmite' book。 。。。more

Definitely one of the worse book I’ve read。 I don’t get the hype。 It was boring, and not interesting at all。 You don’t really care for the characters you don’t care who’s the killer。 I hated that every chapter is 2 pages long。

Erin

I just finished the book and to be honest I can’t remember anything that happened

What a delight! What a joy! What a hoot!Murders。 Lemon drizzle cake。 A narrator whose dizzying tangents are rife with the most charmingly spot-on Britishisms。 And kindness everywhere 。 So much kindness and understanding—the sorts that can only come from having lived a full life。 Four main characters so finely drawn, and so attuned, that one can only hope that Richard Osman never tires of writing about them and that they will go on as a quartet such as no other retirement home has ever known。 I n What a delight! And if so, would you ever spill the beans? Please, dear readers, go with the audio version on this one。 It is perfectly perfect! 。。。more

Certain things drive me nuts and this book had a few of them but the biggest is the constant repetition of names。 A prime example is the first page of chapter 17 where one person's name was repeated 6 times。 It was the only person being referred to。 Couldn't finish it。 Certain things drive me nuts and this book had a few of them but the biggest is the constant repetition of names。 A prime example is the first page of chapter 17 where one person's name was repeated 6 times。 It was the only person being referred to。 Couldn't finish it。 。。。more

Making murder clever and funny? Yes please! I love that the characters are funny and relatable。 I’m in my 30’s and I really loved how this was written from the perspective from characters in a very different generation。 I really loved that aspect of the book。

Susan McIntyre

crap。

Charlotte Kinsey

5/5- such a brilliant book!Without giving too much away, the book moved along at just the right pace, kept you guessing and delivered a murder mystery in such an enjoyable way (I know that sounds strange!) that made it a great read。 All the pieces weaved together perfectly at the end and I couldn’t put it down!

Emma Rice-Jenkins

Highly recommend。 Very witty。 Thoroughly enjoyed

An interesting inaugural book, and an interesting shift in career for Richard Osman。 Enjoyable for the most part, Osman does not resort to tropes or easy outs。 Maybe my expectations are low, but for me, that is a remarkable accomplishment in a first time author。 I think that Osman is such an intelligent man that he will actually make a very good author

I enjoyed this book。 Sections were great to read and made me laugh! Others, left me slightly confused so I had to reread them - hence the 4/5 stars。 However, I now have the next two books in the series which I cannot wait to read! I love the gang at Cooper’s Chase and this book had plenty of plot twists / potential suspects throughout!

Helen

the beginning of a great seriesThere are so many quintessential British lines in this book, in the plot, in the characters, in the scenery。 It is so much fun, it has so many layers of charm and intrigue。 Points of view are scattered everywhere and finally tell the entire tale - until there is another, and another, and another。 Delightful read, from a pro。

Donna Andrus

found me a new favorite author

Sarah Murphy

So much fun。 Who did do it? And which murder should they solve first。 Enjoyed this a lot with the various voices ringing true, and a cast of likely characters。 Great ensemble book。

Sasha Mackenzie

Funny。 Witty。 Well written with an insight to older folks thinking with a variety of characters from different back grounds and life。 Hilarious and keeps you hooked from start to end。

Kim Drew

I really wish half stars were an option because I would give this 3 1/2。 It took me some time to get into it but the characters made me laugh at various points。 I doubt I’ll pick up the others in the series but it was an enjoyable (although slow) read for me。

Sidney

Two murders are solved by four friends who live in a retirement community in Kent。 Osman shows his sense of humor through Joyce’s character。 Thank you, literary friends, for the recommendation。

Theresa

slow start but an absolutely fabulous book!

Ruth Sawatsky

Loved this book!

Alexcia

I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a medium paced murder mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat。 I loved this book very much, but the way it was wrapped up wasn’t my favorite。

Sally

Entertaining read, likable main characters

Mary Tonks

When four residents of a retirement community set out to solve crimes, this on being a current case, they are ruthlessly efficient in their efforts。 Fast-paced, with enough time between revelations to allow you to try and solve the crime, too。
